Michael Moore on GM

Goodbye, GM
by Michael Moore

June 1, 2009

I write this on the morning of the end of the once-mighty General Motors. By high noon, the President of the United States will have made it official: General Motors, as we know it, has been totaled.

As I sit here in GM's birthplace, Flint, Michigan, I am surrounded by friends and family who are filled with anxiety about what will happen to them and to the town. Forty percent of the homes and businesses in the city have been abandoned. Imagine what it would be like if you lived in a city where almost every other house is empty. What would be your state of mind?

Another World Is Here

Another world is possible, this very moment, when we choose to live it. It begins with your very next breath. Awakening is not something that happens in the future, someday - it happens in this moment, moment to moment. There is nothing standing in your way, in our way. When we begin to live another world, today, we will soon discover that new world reflected all around us. As more and more of us choose an uncompromising life, a life that is truly lived, a life beyond sleep walking, avoidance or the numbing anaesthesia of fear, the more attainable that world is for everyone else. The field of possibility expands exponentially each time one of us chooses to step up to the plate and shine.

Human beings are a complex concoction, a molten mixture of mind, body, spirit, and shadow; a combination of the mental, physical, and spiritual plus all the goop from the dark cellar of our psyches, all coming together to create a fragrant, stinking, steaming sumptuous human stew that is uniquely me, uniquely  you.  To bring all these elements, and the many elements within these elements, into conscious harmony, to become an integrated self aware human, is no mean feat.  It's a life long project that is never done, one that we started 14 billion years ago, and might very well continue after we die. But right now, in this earthbound plane of existence, at this particular time in history, the journey towards consciousness is moving into a whole new level, ready for the quantum leap off the tired old maps of the conquistadors, into the uncharted terrain of new possibility, propelled by the urgency of a planet in deep peril.

Defiantly Hopeful

merry-crisis

In the face of a world in crisis, I dare to care. In the face of materialism, consumerism, and me me me - ism, I recognize that I am because you are, that without you and you and you - plant animal mineral macro micro organism human- I would not exist. That we are all part of a brilliant multi hued tapestry, that we all add to the warp and weave and woof, that we all have a fierce light.

In the face of irony, cynicism, jadedness and despair, I choose hope. In the face of narrow empiricism, the confining corridors of quantification, of dogma of any stripe-rational, political, spiritual or religious, I choose to light a match to the fuse of possibility, and blow up all boxes, sending the church of reason, the church of ideology, the church of churchiness, into the air, with a deep and satisfying boooooom, so that emptied of their arrogance, these churches might offer us freedom, not more walls, love, not more hate, understanding, not more separation.

In the face of hatred, anger and fear, I choose love, compassion, and celebration. If I can't party in your revolution, don't put me on the guest list.
